About Caverject

What is Caverject?

The active ingredient in Caverject is alprostadil, a vasodilator that improves blood flow to the penis. This can help men with erectile dysfunction maintain an erection. Caverject comes in a single-dose, prefilled injector.

How do I use Caverject?

Follow all the instructions that come with your prescription, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to safely use Caverject. This medication should be injected directly into the penis, and you should rotate the injection site with each dose to avoid irritation. Clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before administering a dose, and after each injection, apply pressure to the site with an alcohol swab for about 5 minutes to reduce the likelihood of bruising. You should develop an erection within 5 to 20 minutes of the injection.

What if I forget to use a dose of Caverject?

The Caverject drug is used on an as-needed basis to achieve an erection before sex, so forgetting a dose should not be an issue.

What happens if I overdose on Caverject?

Overdosing on Caverject may cause dizziness, fainting, or an erection lasting over 4 hours. If you believe that you have overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Before taking Caverject, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to alprostadil or have any other allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially other medications to treat impotence

  • You have sickle cell anemia or the trait for this condition

  • You have a bone marrow tumor

  • You have leukemia

  • You have a penile implant

  • You have a deformed penis

  • You have Peyronie’s disease or penile fibrosis

  • You have a history of blood clots or a blood clotting disorder

  • You have heart disease or high blood pressure

  • You have hepatitis, HIV, or another disease that could be transmitted through blood

What are the possible side effects of taking Caverject?

Caverject may cause mild injection site pain, irritation, or slight bleeding. Stop taking Caverject and contact your doctor right away if you have any redness, tenderness, or swelling of the penis; lumps or curving of the penis when it is erect; difficult or painful urination; severe pain of the penis or urethra; severe dizziness; or an erection that lasts more than 4 hours.

How do I store Caverject?

Store Caverject at room temperature, away from high heat, light, and moisture, and out of reach of any children or pets in your home. After mixing the medication, you can continue storing it at room temperature, but you will need to use it or discard it within 24 hours. Talk to your pharmacist to determine how to safely dispose of unused medication.

Warnings

If you are using Caverject before having sex with a partner who is pregnant or could become pregnant, use a condom to prevent the transfer of the medication. Because Caverject can cause dizziness, be careful driving or performing other activities that require alertness and clear vision until you’re sure you can do so safely.
