About Oracea

What is Oracea?

Oracea is the brand name of the antibacterial antibiotic medication doxycycline. It is a member of the tetracycline class of medicines, and works by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria. It is not effective against viruses or for illnesses caused by a virus. Because the Oracea cost can be quite high, download the reusable Oracea coupon from the FamilyWize website to receive an Oracea discount when purchasing this medication.

How do I take Oracea?

Oracea is prescribed in 40mg capsules to be taken orally, typically twice daily or according to the directives of the doctor, with a full glass of water. If Oracea causes an upset stomach, it can be taken with milk or food, but doing so may inhibit the amount of medication absorbed. If this medication has been prescribed to prevent malaria, begin taking it one or two days prior to travelling to the area where contracting a malarial infection is possible.

What if I forget to take a dose of Oracea?

If you miss your scheduled dose of the Oracea medicine, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next regular dose, skip the one missed, and resume the normal routine. Do not take additional doses to make up for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Oracea?

If an overdose of the Oracea medicine is expected, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Oracea, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to doxycycline or any of the ingredients in Oracea medicine

  • You are allergic to any medications

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You have, or have had, diabetes or kidney or liver disease

  • You are allergic to tetracycline, minocycline, or sulfites

  • You are taking antacids, laxative, iron or vitamin supplements

What are the possible side effects of taking Oracea?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking Oracea. Less severe side effects include a sore or painful mouth, diarrhea, or rectal or vaginal itching. If any of these symptoms worsen or persist, contact your physician for assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives or a rash, or swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, throat, or face); severe headache; symptoms of jaundice; blurred vision; vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain or an upset stomach; changes in urine or frequency of urination; dizziness or confusion; and sudden or extreme weakness or tiredness.

How do I store Oracea?

Keep Oracea in its original container, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Dispose of any expired or unused capsules according to the directions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight while taking Oracea. Inform your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Oracea, when taken during pregnancy, or administered to children ages eight and under, may cause permanent staining of infants’ or children’s teeth.
