About Mirvaso

What is Mirvaso?

Mirvaso (brimonidine) is a topical gel that is applied to the skin of the face to reduce redness caused by rosacea. It is believed to work by reducing the excessive blood flow associated with rosacea redness. It is not a cure for rosacea, but it can help clear up skin for up to 12 hours.

How do I take Mirvaso?

A pea-sized amount of the Mirvaso gel should be applied once daily to the five areas of the face (forehead, chin, nose, and cheeks) unless your dermatologist or pharmacist gives you different instructions. Make sure to apply a thin and even layer to your face, avoiding your eyes, lips, and any irritated skin or open wounds. Wash your hands immediately after you finish the application.

What if I forget to take a dose of Mirvaso?

If you forget to use Mirvaso, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next application. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal application schedule. Do not increase the amount of Mirvaso you apply in an effort to catch up.

What happens if I overdose on Mirvaso?

You are not likely to overdose on Mirvaso by applying it to your skin; however, this medication can be very harmful when swallowed. Ingesting Mirvaso can lead to fatigue, difficulty breathing, a slower heart rate, confusion, sweating, twitching, and muscle spasms. If you or anyone in your household is exhibiting symptoms of ingesting this medication, seek emergency medical attention.

Before taking Mirvaso, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Mirvaso (ask your health care provider for a list)

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications

  • You have blood pressure or blood circulation problems, or have ever had a stroke

  • You have cardiovascular problems

  • You have a history or family history of depression

  • You currently have any irritated skin or open sores

  • You have Raynaud’s phenomenon

  • You have dry mouth, especially if it is caused by Sjogren’s Syndrome

  • You have scleroderma (a condition that causes hardening of the skin)

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Mirvaso?

In some uncommon cases, patients have reported a “worsening” of redness after using Mirvaso. Other possible side effects include flushing, a burning sensation, and skin irritation. These side effects may occur about 3 to 4 hours after applying the Mirvaso gel and will likely go away on their own; if they do not, or if you are experiencing any side effects that cause great discomfort or pain, contact your doctor.

How do I store Mirvaso?

Line up the grooves on the cap and tube, and then press down on the cap and twist it to the right to completely seal your Mirvaso gel after each use. Store the tube of gel at room temperature, away from light and moisture. As with all prescription medications, you should keep Mirvaso out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Mirvaso is only intended for use on the face—do not apply it to any other parts of your body. Avoid getting the gel in your eyes or on your lips when applying it. Talk to your doctor about the risk factors of using this medication if you have a heart or blood vessel problem, as this drug can lower blood pressure.
