What is Myfortic?

Myfortic helps to prevent the body from rejecting new organs by suppressing the body’s immune system. It works by stopping the proliferation of white blood cells until the medication is discontinued.

How do I take Myfortic?

Myfortic is normally taken twice daily at the same times every day. This medication should be taken on an empty stomach, either one hour before or two hours after eating. Do not crush, break or chew Myfortic tablets. Doses will vary by patient. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Myfortic is normally taken for at least six months after a transplant.

What if I forget to take a dose of Myfortic?

If you forget to take a dose of Myfortic, take the missed dose as soon as your remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal routine. Do not take more than one dose at a time to try to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Myfortic?

Signs of overdose on Myfortic include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, heartburn, and possibly fever or signs of infection. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Myfortic, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Myfortic, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have ever had anemia or a low red or white blood cell count.

  • You have ever had Lesch-Nyhan or Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome.

  • You have any gastrointestinal diseases or disorders, including ulcers.

  • You have kidney or liver disease.

  • You have recently had or are schedule to have a vaccination.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Myfortic.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have ever had lymphoma or leukemia.

  • You or anyone in your family has had skin cancer.

  • You have HIV or AIDS.

What are the possible side effects of taking Myfortic?

Possible Myfortic drug side effects include nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, shaking, bloating and trouble sleeping. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include swelling, accelerated heart rate, fever, signs of infection, seizures, confusion, difficulty moving or concentrating, diarrhea, black or bloody stools, black or bloody vomit, pale skin, chest pain, yellow skin or eyes, abnormal fatigue, rash and fainting.

How do I store Myfortic?

Store Myfortic in an airtight container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Because Myfortic purposely weakens the immune system, patients taking it are at higher risk of getting an infection or contagious illnesses. Do not get a vaccine before or immediately after taking Myfortic or during the course of treatment. Try to avoid sick people and wash your hands frequently. This medication can cause birth defects and miscarriages. You will be tested to ensure that you aren’t pregnant before starting this medication. Myfortic may increase your risk of developing lymphoma and skin cancer. Avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps as much as possible while taking this medication. Use sunscreen and/or cover your skin.
