About Methylphenidate HCL

What is methylphenidate HCl?

Methylphenidate HCl is a psychostimulant drug that is primarily used to treat ADHD. It is also sometimes used as a day treatment for narcolepsy. Methylphenidate HCl works to stimulate the central nervous system by increasing the availability of norepinephrine and dopamine available in the brain. The causes of ADHD are still not fully understood, and so the mechanism of action of this medication to treat the condition is not completely clear. It is believed that those who suffer from ADHD have lower levels of dopamine and methylphenidate helps by increasing the amount of dopamine available in the synapse. Therapy and lifestyle changes are recommended in combination with drug treatment.

How do I take methylphenidate HCl?

Methylphenidate HCl comes as a tablet or an oral solution. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dosage to figure out a level that works for you. The average dose is between 20-30mg a day for adults and 10-15mg for children, but more or less may be required depending on the individual. Methylphenidate HCl is usually taken 2-3 times a day. Follow your doctor’s instructions for your condition. This medication should be taken 30-45 minutes before a meal. The last dose should be taken before 6:00 pm to avoid complications falling asleep. If using the oral solution instead of the tablets, make sure the dose is measured with a device that is for medicine and not a household kitchen item. Treatment with methylphenidate should be routinely stopped to check for improvements, especially in children. Many children’s symptoms of ADHD will stop or improve after puberty.

What if I forget to take a dose of methylphenidate HCl?

If you forget to take a dose of methylphenidate HCl, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
