About Methylin

Methylin is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant sometimes prescribed to treat ADHD in children and adults. It is also sometimes prescribed to treat narcolepsy, a sleep disorder which makes it difficult to stay awake during the day. It is believed to work by balancing certain natural substances in the brain, which can improve focus and reduce impulsivity and behavior problems.

Take Methylin as directed by your doctor, usually two or three times a day. It is usually best to take this medication about half an hour before a meal, but if you are prone to an upset stomach, you can talk to your doctor about taking it with a light meal or snack. If you are taking the Methylin chewable tablets, make sure you’ve chewed them completely before swallowing. If you’re taking the oral solution, shake the bottle before measuring out a dose.

Take the missed dose once you remember, unless it’s after 6 pm. Taking Methylin late in the day may make it difficult for you to sleep at night. If you don’t remember the missed dose until after 6 pm, skip it and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time.

Overdosing on Methylin can be fatal, so get medical help right away if you suspect that you or someone in your home has taken too much of this drug. Signs of an overdose may include agitation, confusion, vomiting, excessive sweating, muscle twitching, seizures, hallucinations, or loss of consciousness.

Before taking Methylin, tell your doctor if:

· You have any food or drug allergies

· You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements

· You have used an MAOI in the past 14 days

· You have glaucoma

· You have severe anxiety

· You have a personal or family history of Tourette’s syndrome or muscle tics

· You have high blood pressure or heart problems

· You have a family history of heart disease

· You have a history of mental illness or substance abuse

· You have a seizure disorder or have had an abnormal brain wave test

· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

The most commonly reported side effects of Methylin include headache, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, irritability, and insomnia. Monitor all side effects and let your doctor know if you have conditions that get worse or last a long time. Stop taking this medication and call your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe lightheadedness, vision changes, unusual thoughts or behaviors, muscle twitches, muscle pain or weakness, an erection lasting four or more hours, or numbness, tingling, or discoloration in your fingers or toes.

Store your medication at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Methylin can be a drug of abuse, so store your medicine in a secure place that no one but you can access. If you have leftover Methylin pills or solution, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of them safely.

Warnings

Don’t drink alcohol while taking Methylin, as alcohol may make certain side effects worse. Don’t drive or perform other tasks that require clear focus and alertness until you know how this medication affects you. Methylin can be addictive, so don’t take it more often or for longer than your doctor has instructed you to. Never share your medication with anyone else.

Brand Names

Methylin contains the active ingredient methylphenidate. There is a generic version of this drug and an alternative brand name: Ritalin. However, Methylin and Ritalin come in different strengths and forms, so you’ll need to talk to your doctor to determine which medication is best for you. FamilyWize offers coupons for these and many other ADHD medications, so no matter what your doctor prescribes, check our site for savings.
