About Fareston

What is Fareston?

Fareston contains a drug called toremifene which is an estrogen agonist/antagonist. It helps to treat some types of breast cancer by binding to estrogen receptors in the tumor. This blocks the estrogen that has a growth-stimulating effect on the cancer.

How do I take Fareston?

Fareston pills should be taken once daily at the same time every day. The pills should be taken orally, and may be taken with or without food. You should not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Fareston.

What if I forget to take a dose of Fareston?

If you miss a dose of Fareston, take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember to take it. However, if it’s already almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Fareston?

Signs of Fareston drug overdose may include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, hallucinations and vaginal bleeding. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Fareston, seek assistance from the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If this is an emergency, call 911.

Before taking Fareston, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs or supplements, including HIV or antiviral drugs, antifungals, beta blockers, medications for arrhythmias, antibiotics, blood thinners, anti-seizure medications, diuretics, antidepressants, St. John’s wort and any others.

  • You have arrhythmias or long QT syndrome.

  • You have low potassium or low magnesium levels.

  • You could be pregnant, are planning to become pregnant or you are breastfeeding.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Fareston pills.

  • You have ever had bone cancer.

  • You have liver disease or heart disease.

  • You have ever had a stroke or blood clot.

  • You have ever had any blood disorders.

  • You have high blood pressure or diabetes.

  • You are immobile for long periods of time throughout the day.

  • You have any conditions that affect the uterus.

What are the possible side effects of taking Fareston?

Side effects from taking Fareston may include hot flashes, perspiration, dry eyes, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. If any of these side effects are severe or they worsen overtime, tell your doctor. Some side effects can be serious. Tell your doctor right away if you experience negative mood changes, eye pain, signs of infection, severe abdominal pain, yellow skin or eyes, seizures, bone or joint pain or swelling, trouble walking, easily bleeding or bruising, pain or swelling in the groin or calf, pain in the chest, jaw or left arm; fainting, severe headache, slurred speech, vision changes and shortness of breath.

How do I store Fareston?

Store Fareston in a container that protects it from heat and light. Keep the medication at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Fareston may cause QT prolongation or a type of irregular heartbeat that can cause fainting, seizures and death. It’s important to tell your doctor if you have any arrhythmias or low potassium or magnesium levels.
