About Exemestane

What is exemestane?

Exemestane is an aromatase inhibitor. It works by blocking the production of an estrogen, the female hormone that contributes to the growth of tumors in certain types of breast cancers. By blocking estrogen production, exemestane helps stop or even reverse the growth of cancerous tumors. This hormone-related medication is usually only prescribed to women who have already gone through menopause and whose breast cancer has progressed after surgery, radiation, and other cancer treatments.

How do I take exemestane?

Take the exemestane drug only as often as your doctor has instructed you to. Most people who need this medication take it once a day after eating a full meal. It is best to take the medicine at the same time every day, and you should always refill your prescription before it runs out. Talk to your doctor to determine whether you will need regular blood tests while taking exemestane.

What if I forget to take a dose of exemestane?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and get back to your normal dosage schedule. Never double your dose to catch up.

What happens if I overdose on exemestane?

If you believe that you or someone else in your household has overdosed on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Before taking exemestane, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You have not completely gone through menopause (i.e. you still have menstrual periods)

  • You have liver or kidney disease

  • You have individual risk factors for bone thinning (osteoporosis)

  • You have had a heart attack, stroke, or blood clots

  • You have high blood pressure

  • You have high cholesterol

What are the possible side effects of taking exemestane?

Because exemestane affects your hormone levels, it may cause hot flashes, excessive sweating, and hair loss. It may also cause joint, bone, or muscle pain; fatigue; nausea; dizziness; diarrhea; and difficulty sleeping. Let your doctor know if any of these side effects persist or are especially bothersome. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any signs of a serious health problem, including swollen hands or feet, difficulty catching your breath, bone fractures, vaginal bleeding, unusual mood changes, dark urine, jaundice, pain or weakness on one side of your body, vision changes, or sudden severe headaches. This is not a complete list of possible side effects, and you should talk to your doctor if you have any other side effects that concern you.

How do I store exemestane?

Keep exemestane in its original container, stored at room temperature and away from light and moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep exemestane out of reach of children and pets, and talk to your pharmacist if you are not sure how to dispose of unused medicine safely.

Warnings

If you have a caregiver, make sure they know that you are taking exemestane. This drug can pass into body fluids, so it is important that caregivers wear rubber gloves when handling any body fluids, contaminated trash, or soiled clothing. Because exemestane can cause dizziness, be careful driving until you know how the medication affects you.

Brand Name

Exemestane is the generic version of Aromasin. As a generic, it is typically less expensive than its brand name equivalent. However, FamilyWize offers coupons for both exemestane and Aromasin, so you can save money even if your doctor prescribes the brand name form.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
