About Letrozole

What is letrozole?

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor drug. It helps stop tumor growth by blocking the production of estrogen, a female hormone that can speed up the growth of some types of breast cancer. Letrozole can slow or even reverse the growth of breast cancer in postmenopausal women and can also be used to prevent the cancer from coming back.

How do I take letrozole?

Letrozole is typically taken once a day with or without food. However, if your doctor gives you different instructions, defer to her or him. Your doctor may also schedule frequent mineral density and blood tests while you are taking this medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of letrozole?

Try to take letrozole at the same time every day to make it easier to remember. If you do forget, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and get back to your normal dosage schedule.

What happens if I overdose on letrozole?

If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on the letrozole drug, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) immediately.

Before taking letrozole, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or anastrozole

  • You have any other allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially tamoxifen

  • You have a history of blood clots, strokes, or heart disease

  • You have kidney or liver problems

  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol

  • You have low mineral density in your bones

  • You have not completely gone through menopause

What are the possible side effects of taking letrozole?

Possible side effects of letrozole include headaches, hot flashes, dizziness, drowsiness, bone or joint pain, sweating, nausea, diarrhea, and difficulty sleeping. Let your doctor know if you experience any side effects that are particularly bothersome. Call your doctor immediately if you experience any rare but serious side effects, including pain or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, vision changes, coughing up blood, severe headaches, and fainting.

How do I store letrozole?

Keep letrozole at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. If you no longer need this medication or have letrozole pills that have expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of them. Do not flush this medication down the toilet or pour it down a drain.

Warnings

Although it comes in an oral tablet, the letrozole drug can be absorbed through the skin. For this reason, pregnant women should never handle this medication. While taking letrozole, you may experience some dizziness, drowsiness, or temporarily blurred vision. Be careful driving or performing any other tasks that require clear vision until you know how the medication affects you. Limit your alcohol consumption in order to reduce your risk of side effects.

Brand Name

Letrozole is also sold under the brand name Femara. The brand name form is typically more expensive; however, FamilyWize has a coupon for both letrozole and Femara, which can reduce the drug’s retail price considerably.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
