About Amethia

What is Amethia?

Amethia is an extended-cycle hormonal contraceptive. Like most birth control pills, it contains a form of estrogen and progestin. Amethia contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. These synthetic hormones work to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus, stopping ovulation and changing the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of the implantation of a fertilized egg.

How do I take Amethia?

Amethia contains 91 pills in each pack. There are 84 estrogen/progestin pills and 7 estrogen pills. Start taking the first pill in your pack on the first Sunday after your period starts. If your period starts on a Sunday, start taking your pills the following day. Take one Amethia pill per day at the exact same time every day for it to be most effective. After taking the first 84 pills and starting on the 7 estrogen-only pills, you should get your period. If you were not taking another birth control pill before starting Amethia, you will need to use another form of contraception, such as a condom, for 7 days.

What if I forget to take a dose of Amethia?

If you miss a dose of Amethia, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you missed the whole day, take two pills the following day. If you miss more than two doses, you will probably need to use a back-up form of birth control. Ask your doctor what to do if you miss pills for two or more days in a row.

What happens if I overdose on Amethia?

Signs of overdose on Amethia are similar to side effects and include nausea, vomiting and unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting. If you think you have overdosed on Amethia call your doctor right away or call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Amethia, tell your doctor if:

  • If you have ever had a blood clot or a stroke.

  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

  • You have diabetes or gallbladder disease.

  • You have ever had breast cancer or any cancers of the reproductive system.

  • You have ever had kidney or liver disease.

  • You have an underactive or overactive thyroid.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking Amethia?

Possible side effects from taking Amethia include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, weight changes, headache, bloating and spotting between periods. These side effects should lessen over time. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious but rare side effects include negative mood changes, depression, heavy bleeding, yellow skin or eyes, migraines, and breast lumps. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects or if you experience chest pain, left arm or jaw pain, weakness or numbness on one side of the body and lack of coordination.

How do I store Amethia?

Store Amethia in a place where you will always remember to take it. Keep it at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your birth control out of reach of children and pets.
