About Jolessa

What is Jolessa?

Jolessa is a type of extended cycle birth control that lasts for 91 days. Like most birth controls, it contains a form of estrogen and a form of progestin. Jolessa has .15mg of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and .03mg of levonorgestrel (progestin). It works to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucous and stopping ovulation.

How do I take Jolessa?

In order for it to be effective, one Jolessa pill must be taken per day at the same time every day. Pick a time when it is easier for you to remember to take your pill. If you were not previously taking another birth control pill, you may have to use contraception for 7 seven days to wait for the pill to take effect. Talk to your doctor about how long you should wait. You will take the 84 active pills in the pack first. After day 84, you will take one inactive pill per day for 7 days and you will start your period.

What if I forget to take a dose of Jolessa?

If you miss one Jolessa pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember it, and then take your next pill at the regular time. This means you may take two pills in one day. If you miss two pills, take two pills on the day you remember and two the following day to catch up. You must use back up contraception for 7 days. If you miss more than two pills in a row, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose on Jolessa?

Signs of overdose on Jolessa may include exaggerated side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and spotting. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Jolessa, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

What are the possible side effects of taking Jolessa?

Common side effects from taking birth control pills like Jolessa include nausea, bloating, breast tenderness and spotting between periods. These side effects should lessen over time. Jolessa can increase your chances of developing a blood clot and having a stroke or heart attack. If any of these side effects are severe, or if they don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include depression, breast lumps, yellow skin or eyes, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain in the jaw, chest or left arm, slurred speech, severe headaches, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, vision changes, and pain or swelling in the groin or calf. If you miss a period while taking Jolessa, tell your doctor right away.
