About Valium

What is Valium?

Valium is the brand name for generic diazepam. The valium drug has anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative, skeletal muscle relaxant, and amnesic properties that enhance the ability to relax the central nervous system. Valium uses are indicated for management of short-term anxiety relief, acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms, impending or acute delirium and hallucinations, spasticity caused by upper motor neuron disorders, convulsive disorders, and relief from spasms related to restless leg syndrome and other spasm disorders such as from tetanus. The main active metabolite of valium is desmethyldiazepam, and includes the minor active metabolites temazepam and oxazepam. These metabolites are conjugated with glucuronice and are excreted primarily through urination.

How do I take Valium?

Fill your prescription for a reduced valium price in your local pharmacy using our free printable coupons or valium discount card. Valium comes in both liquid and tablet forms, and tablets are prescribed in 2mg, 5mg, or 10mg doses. Valium should be taken only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it longer than the time ordered by your doctor. The dosage you take and how often you take it will vary depending on the strength of the dosage and other individual factors assessed by your healthcare provider. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while being treated with the valium drug unless your doctor advises otherwise. Grapefruit juice can increase the amount of certain medications in your bloodstream.

What if I forget to take a dose of Valium?

If you miss a dose of valium, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

What happens if I overdose on Valium?

An overdose of valium may result in depression ranging from drowsiness to coma. Mild symptoms may include drowsiness, confusion, or lethargy. More serious symptoms include poor coordination, diminished reflexes, hypotension, respiratory depression, coma, and death. An overdose of valium in combination with other CNS depressants, including alcohol, can be fatal. If you suspect valium overdose, call for emergency medical assistance immediately.

Before taking Valium, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to valium or to other benzodiazepines, or if you have any other allergies.

  • You have glaucoma, muscle disease, or have trouble breathing during sleep.

  • You have a medical history of liver disease, kidney disease, lung or breathing problems, or drug or alcohol abuse.

  • You are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking valium, inform your doctor immediately.

  • You are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed, as the valium drug passes into breast milk and may cause undesirable effects to your nursing baby.

What are the possible side effects of taking Valium?

The following is not a complete list of possible side effects, however any change, whether or not listed here, should be reported to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. More common side effects of taking valium include drowsiness, tiredness, muscle weakness, and coordination problems. A less-common effect involves seizures, particularly if you abruptly stop taking valium or decrease your dose. Ensure that you discuss any changes in your valium dosing with your healthcare provider.

How do I store Valium?

Valium should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from direct light, heat and moisture. Do not store valium in your bathroom medicine cabinet. Valium should be kept out of the reach of children and disposed of properly when no longer needed. You should talk to your pharmacy about the proper way to dispose of any unused medication.

Warnings

While taking valium, you should not operate a car or other machinery or engage in dangerous activities until you are certain how valium will affect you. Do not drink while taking valium.

Valium for anxiety is not recommended for psychotic patients and should not be employed over other appropriate treatment. When valium is used in treating convulsive disorders, the possibility of an increase in the frequency or severity of grand mal seizures may require an increase in the dosage of anticonvulsant medication.
