About Trokendi Xr

What is Trokendi XR?

Trokendi XR is a brand name of the drug topiramate, an anticonvulsant medication prescribed for the treatment of certain types of seizures (partial onset, tonic-clonic, or whole body) in those diagnosed with epilepsy or with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. It may also be prescribed to help treat alcohol dependency. Trokendi XR works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.

How do I take Trokendi XR?

Trokendi XR is an extended-release capsule administered orally, once a day, with water and with or without food. Take this medication at the same time every day and swallow the capsule whole; do not chew, break, or crush it. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, talk with your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your diet; he or she may need to alter it.

What if I forget to take a dose of Trokendi XR?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Trokendi XR, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not take multiple doses of Trokendi XR to make up for one that was missed. If more than one dose is missed, contact your healthcare provider.

What happens if I overdose on Trokendi XR?

If an overdose of Trokendi XR is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Some symptoms of an overdose include agitation, vision problems, depression, dizziness, fatigue or sleepiness, appetite changes, shallow or rapid breathing, tachycardia or arrhythmia, seizures, coordination problems, slurring or other speech abnormalities, stomach pain, vomiting, or impaired thinking.
