About Lamictal

What is Lamictal?

Lamictal (lamotrigine) is an anticonvulsant and a triazine derivate, phenyltriazine class AED used alone or with other prescribed medications to treat epileptic seizures, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and partial seizures. It can also be prescribed for manic episodes or abnormal moods in bipolar patients. It works by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels and the release of glutamate in ventral striatum limbic areas.

How do I take Lamictal?

Print one of our Lamictal coupons to use as patient assistance to buy your medication. Always take Lamictal exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Also, the different forms of Lamictal are not necessarily interchangeable, so always be sure you have the correct medication when you get a refill. Your dose will be determined by your medical history, symptoms, and body tolerance.

This medication is taken orally, and may be prescribed for daily use or every other day. For Lamictal XR (extended-release), you will probably take 1 pill per day's dose; do not crush, break, or chew this form of medication. For Lamictal ODT (orally-dissolving tablet), place the tablet in your mouth and allow it to dissolve while moving it around with your tongue; do not swallow this pill whole. Standard immediate release Lamictal, swallow the tablet whole. Lamictal CD (chewable disintegrating) could be swallowed whole, chewed and swallowed, or mixed with a small amount of water and swallowed.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lamictal?

You should not take extra medication or a double dose to make up for a missed dose, so if it is almost time for your next dose simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Maintain your normal dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose on Lamictal?

Most overdoses will have symptoms of increased seizures, blurred vision, lightheadedness, mild coordination issues, or fainting. In these cases, call your local poison control center.

However, some overdoses may require emergency medical assistance. You should do so if you experience any of the following: coma, increased heart rate, severe dizziness or drowsiness, severe unsteadiness, severely slurred speech or dry mouth, severe headache, or uncontrolled rolling of the eyes back and forth.

Before taking Lamictal, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of depression or other mood disorders, especially involving suicidal ideations or actions.

  • You have had allergic reactions or other serious reactions to other anticonvulsant medications.

  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease.

  • You have or have a history of bone or bone marrow disorders.

  • You have or have a history of heart disease or other cardiovascular problems.

  • You have thalassemia.

  • You have or have a history of any disorders that have skin rashes as a symptom.

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

  • You are taking or plan to take birth control.

  • You are currently prescribed valporic acid.

  • You are taking any other prescribed or over-the-counter medications, drugs, vitamins, or supplements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Lamictal?

Some side effects are severe and require immediate medical assistance. These include: allergic reactions (hives and itching, swollen face or lips, swollen tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, swollen glands, painful sores around the eyes or mouth), signs of rash no matter how mild, jaundice, unusual or easy bruising or bleeding gums, pale skin, body ache, headache, neck stiffness, tingling or numbness, muscle weakness or cramps, severe clumsiness or unsteadiness, swelling , fever or swollen glands, increased sensitivity to light, irregular eye movements, changes in vision including blurred vision or double vision, confusion or trouble concentrating, stomach pain or loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, constipation, black or tarry stool, blood in the stool or urine, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath or having trouble breathing, irregular heart rhythm or chest pain, dark urine or decreased/stopped urination.

Warnings

Lamictal may cause a life-threatening rash which can require hospitalization, especially when prescribed to children. The risk can be increased if also taken with valporate. Call your doctor at the first sign of rash. Sometimes suicidal ideations may occur while on this medication. You should always report to your doctor if you experience: changes in behavior or mood, anxiety or agitation, hostility, restlessness or hyperactivity, increased depression, worsening symptoms, suicidal thoughts or actions.

Do not stop taking this medication without being told to do so by your doctor, even if you feel well. Do not suddenly stop taking Lamictal, as it could cause increased seizures.

Taking this medication while pregnant presents a risk of your baby developing a cleft palate or cleft lip. Contact your doctor as soon as you discover you're pregnant. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication may exacerbate certain side effects.

Brand Names

Lamictal is the brand name for the generic anticonvulsant lamotrigine. While there are several forms of Lamictal medication (XR, ODT, CD) there aren't any other brands currently available for this specialty drug. That makes Lamictal’s retail price fairly high. While there is some Lamictal patient assistance available, such as a manufacturer's coupon, patients often need as large of a discount as possible. Our Lamictal coupons can save as much as 86% on the retail cost at your local pharmacy. Simply click the Claim Discount link to print or download your free Lamictal coupon or get a free reusable discount card.
