About Rosuvastatin

What is rosuvastatin?

Rosuvastatin is a medicine that is both a selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which is the rate-limiting enzyme that converts coenzymes into mevalonate. Mevalonate is a precursor of cholesterol. Without the ability to convert enzymes, cholesterol's precursor cannot be manufactured by the body, so overall cholesterol levels are decreased.

How do I take rosuvastatin?

Take rosuvastatin orally with or without food, and be sure to swallow each tablet whole. If you are on any antacids with aluminum or magnesium, take them at least two hours before you take a dose of rosuvastatin. Take your medication at the same time each day to develop a habit. Continue taking this medication even if you begin to feel well.

What if I forget to take a dose of rosuvastatin?

Take your missed dose of rosuvastatin as soon as you remember to take it. However, if your next scheduled dose is coming up, skip the dose you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Make sure not to take two doses at once or within 12 hours of a previous dose.

What happens if I overdose on rosuvastatin?

You may experience some of the severe symptoms listed above in case of overdose. If you suspect you may have overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or get to an emergency room as quickly as possible.

Before taking rosuvastatin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicine

  • You are taking an herbal preparation or dietary supplement

  • You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • You have a history of muscle problems

  • You have low blood pressure, kidney problems, liver problems, or thyroid problems

  • You have a serious infection

  • You suffer from diabetes or high blood sugar levels

  • You have a history of seizures

  • You are dehydrated, have increased creatine levels, or have metabolism, hormonal, or electrolyte problems

  • You are on dialysis

  • You drink alcohol or have a history of alcohol abuse

  • You have had an organ transplant or have recently had major surgery or a serious injury

  • You do excessive physical exercise

What are the possible side effects of taking rosuvastatin?

Some of the more common side effects associated with rosuvastatin are nausea, stomach pain, constipation, headache, and weakness. Alert a medical professional immediately if you experience severe side effects such as bloody or dark urine, changes in urine production, chest pain, confusion, depression, memory problems, muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, joint pain, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, severe headache, severe nausea or vomiting, severe stomach or back pain, swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet, symptoms of liver problems, or trouble sleeping.

How do I store rosuvastatin?

Store rosuvastatin at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 25 degrees Celsius). Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from heat, moisture, and light, and make sure the container stays out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Rosuvastatin has been known to cause dizziness. The effect may worsen if you combine alcohol or certain medicines with rosuvastatin. Do not operate a car or heavy machinery after taking this medication until you know how you react to it. Use of rosuvastatin may also cause liver problems. In rare cases, fatal liver failure has occurred. This risk is heightened if you drink alcohol or have a history of liver problems. There is also a risk of muscle problems (myopathy) that is greater in people 65 years of age and older, those with liver, kidney, or thyroid problems, or those who take high doses of rosuvastatin.

Brand Names
