About Lipitor

What is Lipitor?

Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (i.e., statin). It lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) by stopping the production of mevalonate, which is the rate-determining-step for cholesterol biosynthesis, and increases HDL (good cholesterol). It's indicated for treating risk of stroke or heart attack and lower the risk of developing heart disease as well as the potential need for heart surgery. Lipitor is intended to be used by adults with coronary heart disease or other risk factors, or with type 2 diabetes.

How do I take Lipitor?

Before buying Lipitor, print our free Lipitor coupon or sign up for a discount card to reduce the cost when you fill your prescription. Take 1 tablet by mouth daily, and take your medication at the same time every day. It can be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. The dosage will be determined by your doctor according to your medical history and health. For full and complete Lipitor patient assistance and instructions, always refer to your doctor or pharmacist. This article is not intended to be a comprehensive medication guide.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lipitor?

If it is less than 12 hours until you need to take your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Maintain your regular dosing schedule. Never take extra medication or a double dose of the Lipitor drug to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Lipitor?

Call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance. Overdoses will need to be treated symptomatically, and there is not a known way to expedite Lipitor clearance.

Before taking Lipitor, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking medication for the treatment of tuberculosis.
