About Pepcid

What is Pepcid?

Pepcid (famotidine) is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that decreases the amount of acid produced by the stomach. The over the counter version (usually Pepcid AC or Pepcid Complete, which also includes calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide) is used to treat average levels of acid indigestion or acid reflux. However, the prescription only version offers more uses for Pepcid, such as treating GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, or ulcers in the intestines or stomach. This medication is also available as an orally disintegrating tablet (Pepcid RPD).

How do I take Pepcid?

Always take Pepcid medicine as prescribed, or if you're taking the over-the-counter version, follow instructions on the medicine label. This may be prescribed as a part of overall lifestyle changes, such as a change in diet, if so, follow all your doctor's instructions.

Acute doses are usually 40 mg (either 1 time daily or 2 doses of 20 mg 2 times daily), while maintenance doses are 20 mg (usually 1 time daily with dinner). Pepcid is often administered as tablets to be taken orally with water, however, if you've been prescribed the oral solution, be sure to use a dose measuring cup or spoon so as to get the correct dose. Pepcid RPD should be handled with dry hands and allowed to dissolve under the tongue completely.

What if I forget to take a dose of Pepcid?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose of Pepcid. Simply skip the missed dose if it is almost time to take the next dose. Otherwise you can take the dose as soon as you remember it.

What happens if I overdose on Pepcid?

If you suspect an overdose, contact your local poison control center.

Before taking Pepcid, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any medical allergies, especially to similar antacids such as nizatidine, ranitidine, and cimetidine.

  • You have or have a history of pulmonary problems, including asthma and COPD.

  • You have or have a history of more serious gastrointestinal problems or disease, including stomach cancer.

  • You have or have a history of Long QT syndrome.

  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disorder or disease.

  • You have or have a history of cardiac problems, disorder, or disease, including heart failure, heart attack, or stroke.

  • You are or have been experiencing symptoms that may be connected to a heart attack (e.g., chest pressure, chest pain that may spread to the jaw or shoulder).

  • You are taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, medications, supplements or vitamins, especially other antacids, as they may interact with Pepcid.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed, as Pepcid may harm your child.

What are the possible side effects of taking Pepcid?

Some Pepcid side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention. These include: pounding/fast heartbeats with accompanying severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, unusual tiredness, unexplained muscle pain or tenderness, muscle weakness especially if accompanied by fever, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, hives, dark urine.

Common side effects include: mild dizziness, headache, diarrhea, constipation.

How do I store Pepcid?

Keep Pepcid medicine at room temperature away from excess moisture, heat, or light (e.g., a bathroom). The oral solution should not be allowed to freeze.

Warnings

Be careful not to confuse the symptoms of heart burn with those of a heart attack. If you experience chest pain, pain that spreads to your jaw or shoulder, or a heavy feeling in your chest with sweating, nausea, or a generally ill feeling, seek medical attention.

If your symptoms have not improved in 6 weeks, especially if taking acute doses, talk to your doctor.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Pepcid, as it increases the risk of damage to your stomach.

Pepcid can cause dizziness, so do not perform potentially hazardous tasks until you know how you'll react to this medication.

Brand Names

The generic Pepcid medicine is famotidine, and while there have been other brands (e.g., Fluxid, Duexis), there's only one other famotidine-based medicines on the market - Mylanta AR. Because of this, the Pepcid retail price can be a little expensive. We offer a coupon for Pepcid that allows you to take 88% off of normal Pepcid medicine or 64% off of Pepcid RPD.
