About Namenda

What is Namenda?

Namenda, or memantine, is an NMDA receptor blocker medication used to treat dementia from Alzheimer’s. It is not a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but is used to treat symptoms. It is thought that memantine regulates the activity of glutamate, a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory. Glutamate docks to NMDA receptors in the brain causing calcium to transmit freely into these cells. Over time this leads to an overexposure of calcium, accelerating brain cell damage. Memantine protects brain cells against the excess glutamate that is released in large amounts by cells damaged by Alzheimer’s disease. It works by partially blocking NMDA receptors, allowing for less transmission of glutamate and therefore less calcium buildup in brain cells.
