About Microgestin 1/20

What is Microgestin 1/20?

Microgestin 1/20 is a birth control pill that contains 1mg of norethindrone and .02mg of ethinyl estradiol. Norethindrone is a type of progestin and ethinyl estradiol is a type of estrogen. These two hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and by thickening cervical mucous to make it more difficult for the sperm to reach the egg. It may also change the uterine lining to make it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach itself.

How do I take Microgestin 1/20?

One Microgestin 1/20 pill should be taken once daily at the same time every day. These pills can be taken with or without food. Choose a time of day when it is easiest for you to remember to take your pill, and always take the pill at that time. The more consistent you are with your dosing schedule, the less likely you are to get pregnant. Take one pill per day until the pack is gone, then start a new pack. You should get your period while you are taking the last 7 pills in the pack.

What if I forget to take a dose of Microgestin 1/20?

If you forget to take one of your Microgestin 1/20 pills, take the missed pill as soon as you remember, and then continue on your normal schedule. If you miss two pills, take two pills on the day you remember and two the next day. You should use back up contraception for 7 days. If you miss a pill during the last week of the pack, you do not have to take the missed pill. If you ever miss more than two pills in a row, ask your doctor what to do.
