About Amethyst

What is Amethyst?

Amethyst contains two female hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin). These hormones prevent ovulation and make it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. It is used to prevent pregnancy but does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

How do I take Amethyst?

Begin taking Amethyst on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts. Take one tablet per day in the order they appear in the packet (the last 7 are “reminder” pills that do not contain female hormones). This medication is most effective and easiest to remember if you take your dose at the same time every day. Always be sure to refill your prescription before you run out of tablets.

What if I forget to take a dose of Amethyst?

It is very important that you stick to a daily schedule when using Amethyst. If you miss one active pill (one of the pills in the first three rows of the packet), take that pill and the next one on the day that you remember, and then resume your normal schedule for the rest of the packet. If you miss two active pills from Week 1 or 2, take two pills for two days when you remember. If you miss two active pills from Week 3 or more than two pills from any of the active weeks, contact your doctor to find out what to do. You should use a back-up birth control method for at least seven days after missing two or more doses.

What happens if I overdose on Amethyst?

Overdosing on Amethyst can cause vaginal bleeding, nausea, and vomiting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Before taking Amethyst, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, or a blood clotting disorder

  • You have diabetes complications that affect your kidneys, eyes, or circulation

  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer, or you have other risk factors for breast cancer

  • You have any unexplained vaginal bleeding or a history of irregular menstrual periods

  • You get severe migraines

  • You have liver problems

  • You have a history of depression

  • You have an underactive thyroid

  • You have epilepsy

  • You have gallbladder disease

  • You have tuberculosis

  • You are a smoker

  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have recently given birth

What are the possible side effects of taking Amethyst?

Amethyst can sometimes cause mild nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness or swelling, vaginal irritation, and weight gain. This medication can also cause irregular menstrual periods for the first few months of use. Some women experience side effects when they first start taking Amethyst but find that the side effects subside as their body adjusts to the medication. If you have side effects that last a long time or are bothersome, tell your doctor. Stop taking the Amethyst drug and call your doctor right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, including coughing or difficulty breathing, numbness or weakness, chest pain, severe migraines, breast lumps, jaundice, dark-colored urine or stools, or signs of depression.

How do I store Amethyst?

Do not leave your Amethyst birth control medicine anywhere that children or pets could easily access it, and do not remove pills from their packaging until you are ready to take them. Store your birth control medication at room temperature, away from heat and humidity.

Warnings

Do not smoke while taking Amethyst or any other birth control pills; this increases your risk for blood clots, heart attack, and stroke, especially if you are over 35. Do not take birth control pills for at least 4 weeks after having a baby. If you experience severe vomiting or diarrhea while taking Amethyst, use a back-up method of birth control.

Brand Name

The birth control drug Amethyst containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel was formerly available under the brand name Lybrel; however, this brand name medication has been discontinued. Amethyst is the current formulation, and there is not a generic therapeutic equivalent. If you need the Amethyst but are worried about the monthly cost, remember to get a free coupon from FamilyWize.
