About Yaz

What is Yaz?

Yaz is an oral contraceptive containing two female hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and drospirenone (a progestin). It works by preventing an egg from being released and fertilized during your menstrual cycle, and by making vaginal fluid thicker so that it’s more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. In addition to helping to prevent pregnancy, it can also help make periods more regular, decrease blood loss during periods, treat moderate acne, and decrease the risk of developing ovarian cysts.

How do I take Yaz?

Take Yaz once a day, at the same time every day. If you are just starting to use this medication, take the first pill in the packet the first Sunday after the beginning of your period. Take the pills in the order they are placed in the packet, as the last 7 are ‘reminder pills’ without hormones. You do not have to take this medication with food, but some people find that taking it after a meal helps decrease nausea and stomach upset.

What if I forget to take a dose of Yaz?

Your product packaging should contain instructions on what to do if you miss one or more of your Yaz birth control pills, and you can also talk to your doctor if you are unsure. If you do miss a dose, you may need to use a back-up birth control method for several weeks to prevent pregnancy. If you have difficulty remembering to take Yaz on a daily basis, talk to your doctor about other birth control alternatives.

What happens if I overdose on Yaz?

Overdosing on Yaz can lead to unusual vaginal bleeding, nausea, and vomiting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Before taking Yaz, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Yaz birth control pills

  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs

  • You have diabetes

  • You have just had major surgery, or you have major surgery scheduled

  • You have had a stroke, blood clots, or you have a blood clotting disorder

  • You get severe migraines

  • You have a history of kidney or liver problems

  • You have a history of heart problems

  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol

  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • You have a history of jaundice while using birth control or while pregnant

  • You have a history or family history of depression

What are the possible side effects of taking Yaz?

During the first few months of using Yaz pills, you may experience ‘spotting’ (light bleeding between periods) or irregular periods. Some people have also experienced nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, headache, bloating, or weight change. If any of these side effects persist or are negatively impacting your day-to-day life, tell your doctor. You should also talk to your doctor if you miss more than two periods in a row while taking Yaz. Contact your doctor right away if you experience continuous spotting, heavy vaginal bleeding, muscle weakness, slowed heartbeat, or symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.

How do I store Yaz?

Keep Yaz at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of the bathroom. Do not leave it within reach of children or pets.

Warnings

Before taking Yaz, tell your doctor if you will have to be in a bed or chair (such as on a long flight), as this medication can increase your risk for blood clots. This drug may cause your skin to develop blotchy patches (melasma) if you are in the sun for a long period of time, so avoid prolonged sun exposure and always wear sunscreen and/or protective clothing when you need to be outside. In some cases, Yaz can make it uncomfortable for you to wear contact lenses. Talk to your optometrist if this occurs.

Yaz is a brand name oral contraceptive. It is also available under several generic names: gianvi, vestura, nikki, and loryna. If your doctor decides that the brand name medication is right for you, remember to use your Yaz coupon from FamilyWize to reduce the cost.
