About Vitamin D2

Vitamin D2, in the form of ergocalciferol, is essential for the absorption of calcium in the stomach and the function of calcium throughout the body. Vitamin D2 is prescribed for the treatment of hypoparathyroidism, rickets, and low levels of phosphate in the blood.

Take this medication as prescribed by your doctor and follow the instructions on the label. Measure any liquid medication with a dose-measuring spoon or cup. Your blood may need to be frequently tested while taking vitamin D2, and you may need x-rays as well.

You should take the missed dosage as soon you remember. Skip the missed dose if it’s close to time for your next scheduled dose. Don’t take any extra medication to make up for missed medicine.

You should immediately seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of vitamin D2 can be serious or fatal. Symptoms may include headache, weakness, metallic taste in mouth, change in heart rate, itchy skin, confusion, unusual thoughts and behaviors, feeling unusually hot, severe spreading upper stomach pain, and fainting.

Before taking vitamin D2, tell your doctor if:

· You have heart disease

· You have coronary artery disease

· You have kidney disease

· You have an electrolyte disease

· You have high levels of calcium in your blood

· You have levels of vitamin D in your blood

· You have any condition that makes it difficult for your body to absorb nutrients from food

· You have any food or drug allergies

· You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications

· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: thinking problems, changes in behavior, feeling irritable, urinating more than usual, chest pain, feeling short of breath, or early signs of vitamin D overdose (weakness, metallic taste in mouth, or weight loss).

You should store your vitamin D2 at room temperature and keep it away from sources of moisture, heat, and light.

Warnings

Don’t use this medication if you’re allergic to vitamin D, have high levels of vitamin D in your blood, or if you have difficulty absorbing nutrients from food. Tell your doctor about any allergies you have and let him/her know about any other supplements and medication you take or want to take.

Brand Names

Vitamin D2 is available in several prescription brand name applications, including Calcidol, Calciferol, Drisdol, and generically as vitamin D2. Discuss which option is best for treating your condition with your doctor. Save on the price of vitamin D2 with a coupon from FamilyWize and you’ll get a discount up to 75% off each time you fill your prescription.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
