About Tamiflu

What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is the trade name for the antiviral drug oseltamivir. This medication is used to help fight the flu virus, mainly influenza types A and B. Virus do not replicate on their own but invade host cells and use them to replicated themselves. After replication, new viral particles are released from the cell into the body of the host. Tamiflu works by inhibiting a viral enzyme which prevents the newly formed viral particles from being released from their host cells, thus slowing the spread of the virus. There has been debate surrounding the efficacy of Tamiflu and its potential side effects. In most cases, Tamiflu may reduce the duration of viral symptoms by one day, and this is only if treatment begins within 48 hours after the appearance of symptoms. Tamiflu may also work to prevent the flu virus, but the percentage of efficacy is unsure. There is no evidence to support that Tamiflu stops the spread of a virus from one person to another.

How do I take Tamiflu?

Use FamilyWize coupons for Tamiflu or the FamilyWize discount card to purchase your medication in your local pharmacy. Tamiflu comes as a liquid or a capsule to be taken orally. Treatment with this medication should start within 48 hours of the commencement of flu symptoms, and it is usually taken twice a day for five days to reduce symptoms and duration of the flu virus. To prevent the flu, Tamiflu should be taken once a day for ten days. If using the liquid form of Tamiflu, shake the bottle well before each use. Then use the provided measuring syringe to measure your dose. The dose may be emptied from the syringe into your mouth. Don’t mix your dose with other liquids. Do not use a regular household spoon or other device to measure doses of Tamiflu. Take the syringe apart and rinse it after using and allow it to air dry. Tamiflu capsules or oral solution may be taken with or without food, but should be taken with food to help prevent nausea. If a dose of Tamiflu is thrown up within an hour after taking it, it is most likely ineffective. If this happens more than once, contact your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tamiflu?

If you miss a dose of Tamiflu, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If you are only two hours away or less from your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. If you miss more than one dose of Tamiflu, contact your doctor and follow his or her recommendations.
