About Sitavig

What is Sitavig?

Sitavig is a brand name for the antiviral drug acyclovir, a synthetic nucleoside analogue prescribed to treat oral herpes simplex infections (cold sores). It is dispensed as a buccal tablet, and works by stopping the spread of the virus. It is not a cure for herpes.

How do I take Sitavig?

Sitavig is administered as a buccal tablet that is applied to the upper gum at the first sign of a cold sore, on the same side of the mouth as the infection, and according to the instructions of your doctor. Do not apply the tablet to the inside of the cheek or lips. With dry hands, apply the round side of the tablet to the gum as soon as it is removed from the pack. Hold it in place by applying pressure for thirty seconds to the lip or cheek at the spot where the tablet was placed; do not remove or swallow the tablet, but allow it to dissolve. If it falls off within the first six hours, reapply it to the same location. If it does not stay affixed, replace it with another. If you swallow it during the first six hours, drink a glass of water and apply a new one. Do not reapply the tablet if it falls out or is swallowed after six hours have elapsed. Wash your hands before and after applying the medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Sitavig?

Sitavig is intended for use on an as needed basis.

What happens if I overdose on Sitavig?

If an overdose of Sitavig is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services by dialing 911.

Before taking Sitavig, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to acyclovir, milk protein concentrates, or any of the ingredients in the Sitavig tablet

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You have, or have had, any condition or disease the compromises your immune system including HIV/AIDS

What are the possible side effects of taking Sitavig?

Some individuals have reported side effects after using Sitavig. Less severe symptoms include redness, swelling, burning, stinging, or irritation at the application site, or dry or cracked lips. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for assistance.

Severe reactions requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, rash, itching, hoarseness, swelling of the face mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

How do I store Sitavig?

Keep Sitavig tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not open the package until you are ready to use the tablet. Dispose of any unused doses according to the directions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Sitavig will not prevent the spread of the herpes virus.
