About Selenium Sulfide

What is Selenium Sulfide?

Selenium sulfide is a generic anti-infective agent that comes as a lotion. It can be applied as a lotion or used as a shampoo to relieve itching of the scalp and to remove dandruff. It is also used to treat a fungal disease of the skin known as tinea versicolor.

How do I use Selenium Sulfide?

  • If selenium sulfide is being used a a lotion to treat a skin infection, it is typically applied once daily for 7 days.

  • If it is being used as a shampoo, selenium sulfide is typically used twice a week for the first 2 weeks and then once a week for 2 to 4 weeks thereafter, depending on your response to the treatment.

  • When using it as a shampoo, make sure to remove all of your jewelry first, as selenium sulfide may damage your jewelry. Then, wash your hair with your daily shampoo and rinse. Shake the selenium sulfide lotion and massage a small amount into your scalp, then rinse thoroughly after 3 to 4 minutes.

  • If you are using selenium sulfide as a lotion, apply it as directed, usually mixed with a small amount of water and mixed into a lather, and leave it on for 10 minutes, then make sure to rinse off all of the lotion.

  • Do not leave selenium sulfide on your hair, scalp, or skin for long periods of time, such as for several hours or overnight, as irritation may occur.

Follow the instructions included with the packaging of your prescription and use selenium sulfide exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
