About Repatha

What is Repatha?

Repatha belongs to a new class of cholesterol medications called PCSK9 inhibitors. These drugs work differently from statins, fibrates and all other cholesterol medications on the market. They work by inhibiting the PCSK9 enzyme from binding to LDL receptors in the liver. When PCSK9 binds to these receptors, the receptor is destroyed and can no longer perform its function of removing LDL particles from the blood. Because the mechanism of action is different, Repatha can be prescribed in conjunction with statins and other cholesterol drugs to obtain maximum control.

How do I take Repatha?

Repatha comes in the form of a solution to be injected under the skin. It is normally prescribed in doses of 140mg injected twice per month, or as 420mg injected once monthly. This 420mg dose is administered in three consecutive injections. Take Repatha injections out of the refrigerator prior to use, and allow them to warm up to room temperature. This should take at least 30 minutes. Repatha should be injected just under the skin of the upper arm, thigh or abdomen. Your pharmacist or doctor will show you how to administer the injection. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

What if I forget to take a dose of Repatha?

If you miss a dose of Repatha, take the missed dose as soon as you remember as long as there are still seven days remaining before your next dose. If there are seven days or less until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine.

What happens if I overdose on Repatha?

There are no reports available on Repatha overdose. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Repatha, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.

Before taking Repatha, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any medications or any of the ingredients in Repatha.

What are the possible side effects of taking Repatha?
