About Quetiapine

What is quetiapine?

Quetiapine is the generic term for the more commonly known drug Seroquel. Quetiapine is a short-acting antipsychotic drug that is used to treat schizophrenia, episodes of mania from bipolar disorder and bipolar I disorder. It may also be used accompanied by an antidepressant to treat major depressive disorder. This medication has an antagonist or blocking effect on several neurotransmitter receptors including dopamine, serotonin, histamine, and adrenergic receptors. Quetiapine will not cure mental illness, but it will treat symptoms. It should be used along with a complete treatment program which includes therapy.

How do I take quetiapine?

Quetiapine comes as a regular tablet or an extended release tablet to be taken orally. Regular tablets are usually taken three times daily while the extended release tablets are usually taken once daily in the evenings. Your doctor will most likely start you on a low dose and then gradually increase it. Take your medication at the same time every day. Never break, crush, or chew the extended release tablets. Do not abruptly discontinue use of this medication. It may cause withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor to slowly decrease your dosage. If for some reason you have stopped taking quetiapine and a week has passed, call your doctor to slowly begin your medication again.

What if I forget to take a dose of quetiapine?

If you miss a dose of quetiapine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on quetiapine?

Signs of overdose on quetiapine include sedation, elevated or irregular heart rate, coma, and death. If you or someone you know has overdosed on quetiapine, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious, make sure they can breathe. Adjust the victim’s position to open the airway if needed and contact 911 emergency services immediately.

What are the possible side effects of taking quetiapine?

Side effects from taking quetiapine include dry mouth, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, indigestion, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, tremors or involuntary movements, weakness, constipation, and insomnia. Increased blood pressure is a more common side effect in young people. Your doctor should monitor your blood pressure as it can lead to ketoacidosis. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include: dry mouth, fruity breath, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting. This condition is life-threatening. Call your doctor at once if you experience these symptoms. These are not all the possible side effects from taking quetiapine, if you experience any serious or unusual side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

How do I store quetiapine?

Store quetiapine tightly closed in its original container. Keep it at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and protect it from moisture and light. Keep this medication away from children, pets, and anyone prone to drug abuse.
