About Promethegan

Promethegan is part of a class of drugs called phenothiazines. It works by altering the actions of certain brain chemicals and also acts as an antihistamine, blocking naturally-occurring chemical histamines in your body. This medication is used rectally to treat allergy symptoms and motion sickness, as well as nausea, vomiting, and pain post-surgery.

Follow all the directions on your prescription label. This medication is to be used as a rectal suppository and not taken in the mouth or any manner. Try to empty your bowel and bladder right before your Promethegan suppository. Remove the outer wrapper from the suppository before inserting it. Don’t handle it for too long, or it may melt in your hands. For best results, lie down after insertion and hold in the suppository for several minutes. It will quickly melt, and you shouldn’t feel too much discomfort. Avoid using the bathroom for a short while after insertion.

You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. Don’t take any extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

You should seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 in the event of an overdose. Overdose symptoms can include overactive reflexes, coordination loss, severe drowsiness or weakness, fainting, dilated pupils, weak or shallow breathing, or seizures.

Before taking Promethegan, tell your doctor if:

  • You have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, or another breathing disorder

  • You have a sulfite allergy

  • You have a history of seizures

  • You have a condition that causes a weak immune system (such as bone marrow depression)

  • You have glaucoma

  • You have an enlarged prostate or urination problems

  • You have liver disease

  • You have an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma)

  • You have low levels of calcium in your blood (hypocalcemia)

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, ringing in your ears, double vision, feeling nervous, dry mouth, tired feeling, and sleep problems (insomnia). You should stop using Promethegan and call your doctor if you experience severe drowsiness, weak or shallow breathing, a lightheaded feeling, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, nightmares, seizures, fast or slow heartbeats, jaundice, uncontrolled muscle movements, easy bruising or bleeding, sudden weakness or ill feeling, severe nervous system reaction. Talk to your doctor about these symptoms.

Store the Promethegan suppositories in the refrigerator, but do not allow them to freeze. If you no longer need this medication and are unsure how to dispose of unused suppositories, talk to your pharmacist.
