How do I take Prilosec?

Prilosec comes in two forms: a delayed-release capsule and also in packets of delayed-release granules which are meant to be mixed with liquid. Both are taken orally. Nonprescription Prilosec comes as a delayed-release tablet or capsule that are also taken by mouth. The prescription Prilosec pill is typically taken once a day prior to a meal or up to three times a day in the treatment of an overproduction of stomach acid. The nonprescription tablets or capsules are usually taken one time a day at least an hour before eating. This medication is usually taken for 14 consecutive days and repeated every 4 months as needed for maintenance.

Prilosec pills should be taken with a full glass of water and swallowed whole. It should not be crushed up or chewed. The granules should be mixed with your liquid or semi-solid of choice and swallowed immediately with a glass of water. Granules should also not be crushed or chewed.

The powder meant for oral suspension needs to be mixed with water. The 2.5-mg packet should be mixed with 1 teaspoonful of water in a container and the 10-mg packet mixed with 1 tablespoonful of water. After combining the contents of the powder packet with water, it should be stirred. Give the mixture 2-3 minutes to thicken and re-stir. The entire mixture should be drunk within 30 minutes.

What if I forget to take a dose of Prilosec?

If a dose of Prilosec medication is missed, take it as soon as you recall. If it is just about time for the next dose, do not double up on doses, skip your missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose on Prilosec?

An overdose on Prilosec medication may present the following symptoms: vomiting, sweating, flushness, headache, dry mouth, confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, fast or pounding heartbeat, or nausea.

If an allergic reaction or an overdose is suspected, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 and if they advise, go to the hospital immediately. If you or the victim is unable to move or nonresponsive, contact 911 immediately.

Before taking Prilosec, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to omeprazole, dexlansoprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, or any other prescription or nonprescription medications.

• You are currently taking any nonprescription medications, vitamins, or nutritional supplements. (ie: antibiotics like ampicillin, blood thinnners like warfarin or atazanavir, diazepam, cilostazol, clopidogrel, cyclosporine, digoxin, diuretics, iron supplements, ketoconazole, methotrexate, nelfinavir, phenytoin, saquinavir, tacrolimus, or voriconazole)

• You are taking any antifungal or anti-yeast medications.

• Your have experienced heartburn for 3 months or longer.

• If you experience or have experienced lightheadedness, sweating, or dizziness in conjunction with your heartburn.

• You experience or have experienced chest pain or shoulder pain, shortness of breath, wheezing; pain in arms, neck, or shoulders, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting,

• You have or have had difficulty swallowing food, experience black or in blood in your stools.

• You have or have had a low level of magnesium in your blood or liver disease or if you are of Asian descent.

• If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking Prilosec?

Some less severe Prilosec side effects include constipation, gas, nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach cramps, backache, dizziness, cough, or weakness. Report these to your doctor if they continue.

More serious Prilosec side effects that require immediate hospital care or contacting your doctor include: rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, an irregular, fast, or pounding heartbeat, excessive lethargy, dizziness, lightheadedness, muscle spasms, uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body, seizures, diarrhea with watery stools, stomach pain, fever, dry mouth, blurred vision, blood in urine, or any numbness or tingling.

How do I store Prilosec?

Prilosec should be stored in the container or packets that it comes in and safely out of reach of children. It should be kept in a dry, cool area, away from any moisture. If the medication has expired or is no longer needed, it should be discarded.

Warnings

Studies have shown that proton pump inhibitor medications like Prilosec may put people at higher risk for bone breakage. This is typically true in those who take the drug extendedly and in very high doses. Proton pump inhibitors have also been linked to Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). If you develop diarrhea that is watery, accompanied by a fever and abdominal pain that last extendedly, contact your doctor immediately. Medications like Prilosec have also been known to cause low blood magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia). If you are taking Prilosec and you develop symptoms of hypomagnesemia including muscle spasms, seizures, or an irregular heartbeat.

Prilosec is not recommended for those with liver problems. Prilosec can also interact with other medications, so be sure to consult with your prescribing doctor before starting Prilosec or adding any other medications after starting Prilosec.

Prilosec can take from 1 to 4 days to take full effect. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after 14 days of taking the medication, contact your doctor.
