About Pregnyl

What is Pregnyl?

The active ingredient in Pregnyl is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone similar to luteinizing hormone, which is produced in the pituitary gland. In women, the Pregnyl medicine is used to promote ovulation and aid in conception. This medicine is also sometimes used to treat young boys who have a pituitary gland disorder that has prevented their testicles from dropping into the scrotum.

How do I take Pregnyl?

Pregnyl is often administered by a healthcare provider. If your doctor gives you doses to administer at home, follow the instructions on the medication packaging very carefully. You will need to inject each dose into a muscle. Use each disposable needle just once, and dispose of the needle in a puncture-proof container when you are done.

What if I forget to take a dose of Pregnyl?

If you are administering Pregnyl at home and you forget a dose, call your doctor to establish a new dosing schedule.

What are the possible side effects of taking Pregnyl?

When used in young boys, Pregnyl can cause early onset puberty. If your child is using this medication, let his doctor know if he experiences pubic hair growth, increased acne, or a deepening voice. Mild side effects that may occur in men or women include headache, restlessness, breast tenderness, bloating, fatigue, or injection site irritation. Less common but more serious side effects may include swollen feet or ankles, new or worsening depression, or breast swelling (in boys). If you or your child has any of these side effects, tell your doctor right away. Women should contact their doctor immediately if they experience severe stomach pain, sudden weight gain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen legs or hands, severe pelvic pain, or infrequent urination, as these may be signs of a rare but life-threatening condition. Anyone taking this medication should tell their doctor right away if they experience pain, numbness, or tingling in a limb; severe dizziness; severe headache; or confusion. These may be signs of a blood clot.

How do I store Pregnyl?

Pregnyl comes as a powder that is mixed with a liquid before each injection. Keep the vials of powder away from light and moisture, and store them at room temperature. Once you have mixed the Pregnyl medicine, store it in the refrigerator. Dispose of it if you have not used it after 60 days, or if you notice that the liquid has changed colors or has particles floating in it. If you are not sure how to safely dispose of the mixed medication or disposable needles, talk to your pharmacist.

Warnings

Pregnyl is sometimes used along with menotropins as part of a fertility treatment plan, and when these two medication are used together, they can cause multiple births (e.g. twins). Pregnyl medicine should never be used once you become pregnant, as it can cause birth defects.
