About Phenytek

What is Phenytek?

Phenytek is a brand name anticonvulsant that comes as an extended-release (long-acting) capsule, and it is used to control certain type of seizures. Phenytek is also prescribed to treat and prevent seizures that may begin in patients during or after having surgery to the brain or nervous system. This drug is also used to control an irregular heartbeat in patients.

This drug works to treat and control certain types of seizures by decreasing the level of the brain’s electrical activity.

How do I use Phenytek?

Phenytek extended-release capsules are to be taken orally, and this medication is typically prescribed to be taken 1 to 4 times per day. Swallow the extended-release capsules whole. Do not split, crush, or chew the extended-release capsules, as doing so may cause the medication to release into your body all at once.

Do not take any Phenytek capsules that are discolored. Consult with your doctor for instructions on how to use this medication, and follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for using Phenytek.

What if I forget to use a dose of Phenytek?

Take your missed dose of Phenytek as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

What happens if I overdose on Phenytek?

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of overdose on Phenytek may include:

  • uncontrollable eye movements

  • loss of coordination

  • slow or slurred speech

  • shaking or tremors

  • nausea or vomiting

  • coma

Before using Phenytek, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic to Phenytek or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or nutritional or herbal supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you are taking antacids that contain calcium, such as Mylanta or Tums

  • you drink or have ever drunk large amounts of alcohol

  • you have or have ever had diabetes or porphyria

  • you have or have ever had kidney disease or liver disease

  • If you are having surgery, tell your doctor that you are taking this medication.

  • Phenytek may cause dizziness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.

  • Consult with your doctor about whether or not it is safe to drink alcohol while using this medication, as alcohol may increase the dizziness effect of this medication.

  • It is important that you practice proper oral hygiene while using this medication so as to decrease the risk of damage to the gums that may be caused by Phenytek. Consult with your doctor for more information.

Warnings

You may experience mental health changes while using this medication, and you may become suicidal. You, your family, or your caregiver should call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: panic attacks agitation, irritability, or restlessness anxiety or depression impulsive behavior insomnia aggressive, angry, or violent behavior mania expressing suicidal thoughts or having suicidal thoughts withdrawing from friends and family any unusual changes in behavior or mood

You may experience mental health changes while using this medication, and you may become suicidal. You, your family, or your caregiver should call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • panic attacks

  • agitation, irritability, or restlessness

  • anxiety or depression

  • impulsive behavior

  • insomnia

  • aggressive, angry, or violent behavior

  • mania

  • expressing suicidal thoughts or having suicidal thoughts

  • withdrawing from friends and family

  • any unusual changes in behavior or mood

  • Do not let anyone else use your medication.
