About Methocarbamol

What is methocarbamol?

Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant derived from guaifenesin. It works by depressing the central nervous system which causes a sedative effect and relaxes the musculoskeletal system. Methocarbamol is often prescribed in combination with rest and physical therapy to treat muscle spasms and pain caused by sprains and strains. It is also sometimes prescribed to treat anxiety. Methocarbamol has a lower potential for abuse compared to other muscle relaxants.

How do I take methocarbamol?

This medication is to be taken as a supplement to (not a replacement for) rest and physical therapy. Methocarbamol comes as a tablet to be taken orally with a glass of water. Take this medication at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dosage depending on your treatment and progress. Do not crush or chew the tablets as this could result in serious side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of methocarbamol?

If you miss a dose of methocarbamol, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate.

What happens if I overdose on methocarbamol?

Signs of overdose on methocarbamol include fast or irregular heartbeat, nausea and vomiting, severe drowsiness, dizziness and coma. If you or someone you know may have overdosed on methocarbamol contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or has trouble breathing, contact 911 emergency services.

Before taking methocarbamol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to methocarbamol, any other drugs, or any of the ingredients in methocarbamol tablets.

  • You are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, or herbal products, especially medications for seizures, depression, colds, or coughs, sedatives, and tranquilizers.

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Methocarbamol may not be safe if you are over 65 years of age. Talk to your doctor about alternatives.

This medication may make you drowsy. It is not advisable to drive a car or operate machinery while using methocarbamol. Talk to your doctor about the safe use of alcohol while using this medication. Because alcohol is also a central nervous system depressant, it can make the side effects of methocarbamol worse and can be fatal in large amounts.

What are the possible side effects of taking methocarbamol?

Possible side effects from taking methocarbamol include: dizziness, drowsiness, flushing, blurred vision, upset stomach, and headache. An unusual side effect that this medication can cause is a black, blue or green discoloration of urine; however, this effect is harmless.

Serious side effects include allergic reaction, slow heart rate, fainting, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin), abdominal pain, clumsiness and mood changes. Report any serious or bothersome side effects to your doctor immediately.

How do I store methocarbamol?

Store methocarbamol at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication tightly closed in its original container, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
