About Menactra

This medicine is a vaccine that is used to prevent meningococcal infection caused by a certain type of bacteria (Neisseria meningitidis) in patients 9 months through 55 years of age.

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine is administered as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or a clinic. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. If this medicine has been frozen, contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it. STORE THIS MEDICINE as directed on the prescription label. KEEP THIS PRODUCT, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor immediately.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) or medicines that suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), cancer chemotherapy medicines (eg, methotrexate), or cyclosporine. Check with your doctor of pharmacist if you are unsure if any of your medicines suppress the immune system. Tell your doctor if you have recently had or if you will be having any other vaccines. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor if you are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or if you have any other medical conditions, including immune system problems (eg, weakened immune system), HIV infection, problems with your spleen, bleeding problems (eg, hemophilia), low blood platelets, any infection or illness, allergies (including rubber latex), pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of a certain type of nervous system problem (Guillain-Barre syndrome). This medicine is not approved for use in CHILDREN younger than 9 months. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include chills; decreased appetite; diarrhea; drowsiness or irritability (in children younger than 11 years old); hardening, tenderness, pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; headache; joint pain; mild fever; tiredness; unusual crying (in children 9 to 12 months old); or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience burning, numbness, or tingling; fainting; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness; trouble swallowing; weakness in the arms, legs, or facial muscles; or wheezing. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur.
