About Lovenox

What is Lovenox?

Lovenox is an anticoagulant drug that is used to prevent blood clots after certain surgical procedures, including abdominal, hip, or knee replacement surgery, especially for those patients who are confined to a bed. It may also be prescribed for the treatment of existing blood clots in the lungs, legs, or veins and to prevent complications arising from heart attacks. It is classified as a low molecular weight heparin (heparin is an anti-coagulant) and works by preventing the formation of the substances that cause blood clots.

How do I take Lovenox?

Lovenox is delivered by injection, once or twice a day (depending on the patient profile) for up to fourteen days. However, individual prescriptions vary. If you are hospitalized, a healthcare professional will administer the medication. If you are taking this medication at home, ask for Lovenox patient assistance and follow the instructions of your healthcare provider regarding injection. Do not inject the medication into the same spot twice in a row. Do not mix other medications or substances with Lovenox, and do not use it if there are particles in it or the color has changed. Use a disposable needle only once. Because of the limited shelf life of this product and its high cost, consider taking advantage of a Lovenox assistance program to keep the cost of Lovenox within reason.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lovenox?

If you miss your scheduled dose of Lovenox, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next regular injection. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular routine. Do not take multiple doses of Lovenox to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Lovenox?

If an overdose of Lovenox is suspected, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the patient has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 and let them know you need Lovenox patient assistance.

What are the possible side effects of taking Lovenox?

Those who have taken the Lovenox drug have reported side effects. Mild Lovenox side effects include mild pain or irritation at the injection site, nausea, diarrhea, or a fever. However, if these problems persist or worsen, contact your physician.

More severe Lovenox side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (itching, swelling of the mouths, lips, face, throat, and tongue or difficulty breathing or swallowing), swollen feet or ankles, darkened urine, black or bloody stools, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness or tingling, and weakness or paralysis in the legs.

How do I store Lovenox?

Keep Lovenox in its original container out of the reach of children and away from extremes of heat and humidity. Keep syringes tightly sealed until you are ready to use them. Do not let the liquid in the syringes or the vial freeze. If you were prescribed a vial of Lovenox, the entire amount must be used within 28 days of the first dose. Dispose of any remaining our outdated medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist. Dispose of used syringes in accordance with local regulations.

Warnings

Lovenox may cause blood clots in those undergoing a spinal puncture, epidural, or other spinal anesthesia process. Lovenox may cause an increased risk of hemorrhage and thrombocytopenia. Lovenox cannot be used interchangeably with other heparins. Lovenox is considered a specialty medication and the Lovenox cost in a retail setting reflects this status.
