About Lipofen

What is Lipofen?

Lipofen (fenofibrate) is an antilipemic agent, which means it speeds up the way in which the body breaks down fatty substances (particularly cholesterol and triglycerides) that are responsible for the atherosclerosis (a buildup of fats on the artery walls) that cause angina, heart attack, and stroke. It also increases the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in the body, which also helps reduce the risk of heart disease.

How do I take Lipofen?

Always follow your doctor's instruction about how to take this medication. Most often, it's prescribed as 1 capsule taken 1 time daily with food as a part of a larger routine. That routine includes a specific diet that should be started before Lipofen is prescribed, and should be continued for as long as you take Lipofen.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lipofen?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it is almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

What happens if I overdose on Lipofen?

If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance.

Before taking Lipofen, tell your doctor if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.

• You have had a poor or allergic reaction to other fenofibrate medications before.

• You have or have a history of gallbladder, kidney, or liver disease or disorder, especially if severe.

• You are on dialysis.

• You have or have a history of heart or thyroid disease or disorder, or you have or have a history of pancreatitis.

• You are not already on a regimen for diet and exercise.

• You are currently or have recently taken any other drugs, medication, supplements or vitamins, especially gout medicines, other cholesterol medications, blood thinners, and immunosuppresants.

• You regularly drink alcohol or are an alcoholic.

What are the possible side effects of taking Lipofen?

Some severe Lipofen drug side effects are associated with this medication, and require immediate emergency medical attention. These include: allergic reaction, fever and unusual tiredness or weakness with muscle pain or tenderness, unusual bruising (especially as red or purple pinpoint spots under the skin), unusual bleeding from soft tissues (e.g., nose, mouth, rectum), coughing up blood, fast heart rate, nausea and vomiting, sudden cough or wheezing, pain or swelling in one or both legs, redness or warmth in one or both legs, chest pain, or severe upper stomach pain that spreads toward your back.

Common but less severe side effects include: mild stomach or back pain, headache, and stuffed or runny nose.

How do I store Lipofen?

Keep Lipofen in its original container, and do not remove the preservative material that absorbs moisture. Store at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture.

Warnings

Always follow your doctor's instructions concerning diet and exercise while taking this medication. Keep all doctor and lab appointments, as you will need to regularly undergo blood, gallbladder, and liver tests. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Lipofen, as it can both raise your triglycerides and damage your liver in combination with this medication.

In rare cases, some people experience a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue and kidney failure while taking this medication. Talk to your doctor about the risks and symptoms.

Brand Names

Fenofibrate is the generic drug for Lipofen. There are also other brands available for the same medication: Antara, Fenoglide, Triglide, Trilipix. Despite their availability on the market, the cost of Lipofen is still expensive due to the fact that it's a specialty medication. To help you save, we offer a free Lipofen coupon and discount card that will take 88% off the price at your local pharmacy. We also offer discounts on a variety of other cholesterol medications.
