About Linzess

What is Linzess?

Linzess is a gastrointestinal agent, part of the GC-C agonist category of medications used in the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation. It increases the production of an intestinal enzyme and increases fluid secretion. This, in turn, helps facilitate the passage of stools, relieving the symptoms of the conditions that Linzess is formulated to treat. It is available only by prescription.

How do I take Linzess?

Linzess is a prescription medication in capsule form that is usually administered once a day, on an empty stomach, at least half-an-hour before the first meal. To establish a routine, it is recommended that this medication be taken at the same time every day. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or split the capsule. Continue to take the medication even if you feel well. Discontinuing Linzess without your doctor’s approval and supervision may result in the condition returning.

What if I forget to take a dose of Linzess?

If you miss your regularly scheduled dose of Linzess, take it as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is near the time for your next scheduled dose, forego the missed one and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses of this medication to make up for one missed.

What happens if I overdose on Linzess?

If an overdose of the Linzess drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. The most common symptom of an overdose is diarrhea.

Before taking Linzess, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to linaclotide or any of the ingredients in the Linzess capsule

  • You are allergic to any medications

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements

  • You are taking oral contraceptives

  • You are younger than 18

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You have, or have had, a stomach or intestinal blockage

  • You have, or have had, any condition requiring medical attention and treatment

What are the possible side effects of taking Linzess?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking Linzess. Less severe symptoms include gastrointestinal problems such as gas, stomach pain, diarrhea, headache, swelling or pressure in the stomach area, or a full or bloated feeling. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects of Linzess that require immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction such as a rash or hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, face, throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing; black, bright red, or tarry stools; or intense, sudden, or unusual stomach pain.

How do I store Linzess?

Keep Linzess tightly sealed in its original container out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of heat and humidity. Consult with your pharmacist about the safest method for disposing of unused or expired doses.
