About Klor-Con M20

What is Klor-Con M20?

Klor Con M20 is a prescription drug form of potassium chloride, a naturally-occurring mineral compound of potassium and chlorine. The body needs potassium to survive, and potassium chloride is often prescribed to treat potassium deficiencies or hypokalemia. When an individual is deficient in potassium or has hypokalemia, he or she may experience muscle cramps, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, and constipation. Severe hypokalemia can result in respiratory depression from the impairment of skeletal muscle. Some people who are awoken from leg cramping in the middle of the night may need to take potassium supplements. Potassium chloride is also used to treat skin disorders, gout and kidney stones. This medication works by reducing acidity in the blood which decreases swelling in joints and stops crystallizations from forming in the kidneys. It also increases the availability of oxygen in the blood and skin. Different amounts of Klor-Con are prescribed according to the severity of the patient’s condition. Klor-Con M20 mEq is a higher dose of potassium chloride as it contains 1500 mg of potassium chloride or 20 mEq (milliequivalents). Lower doses of potassium chloride can be found in Klor-Con M10 and Klor-Con M15.

How do I take Klor-Con M20?

Klor Con M20 is an extended release medication that slowly releases potassium into the body over time to avoid the dangerous effects of a high build-up of potassium. Do not crush or chew Klor-Con 20 tablets as you will destroy the extended release mechanism. Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water, and take this medication with a meal. Klor-Con 20 is usually taken just once a day. Dissolve effervescent tablets in a glass of approximately 4-5 ounces of water. Allow the tablet to dissolve completely which takes about two minutes. Stir the contents and drink quickly. Put some more water in the bottom of the glass, swirl it around, and consume the remaining contents of the medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Klor-Con M20?

If you miss a dose of Klor-Con M20, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Klor-Con M20?

Signs of overdose on Klor-Con 20 include those of hyperkalemia: nausea, muscle weakness, slow pulse, irregular heartbeat, and numbness or tingling sensations. A potassium overdose can result in heart failure and sudden death. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Klor-Con 20, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the emergency room.
