About Kaletra

What is Kaletra?

Kaletra is a combination antiretroviral drug that contains lopinavir and riotonavir. These are both protease inhibitor drugs. They work by blocking the protease enzyme which is necessary for the virus to reproduce within a cell. Riotonavir also inhibits another enzyme that metabolizes lopinavir. This allows lopinvair to stay in the body longer and have a more powerful effect.

How do I take Kaletra?

You should take Kaletra pills at the same times every day. Do not crush, chew or break the tablets; swallow them whole. If you are taking liquid Kaletra, you should always take your medication with food. You may have to take Kaletra once or twice daily depending on your requirements and the other medications you are taking. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions, and stick to your medication regimen as strictly as possible.

What if I forget to take a dose of Kaletra?

If you miss a dose of Kaletra, take the missed pill whenever you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal regimen. Don’t take a double dose of Kaletra to try to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Kaletra?

Overdose on Kaletra can result in heart attack and cardiogenic shock, kidney failure and lactic acidosis. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Kaletra, call 911. For more information, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about right away include jaundice, abdominal pain, new or worsening diabetes and signs of infection.

How do I store Kaletra?
