About Fosteum

What is Fosteum?

Fosteum is not a drug, but a medical food that is proven to slow bone loss and increase the generation of new bone tissue. Fosteum can treat both osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis) and osteoporosis in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women without dangerous side effects. Fosteum contains genistein which is a type of plant-based estrogen. For this reason, Fosteum may also reduce hot flashes and other menopause symptoms over time.

How do I take Fosteum?

Fosteum should be taken twice daily, and may be taken with or without food. This medication should be taken at the same times every day at 12-hour intervals. If you have a sensitive stomach, try taking Fosteum after meals or with a glass of milk.

What if I forget to take a dose of Fosteum?

If you forget to take a dose Fosteum, go ahead and take the missed dose as soon as your remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Never take double doses to compensate for missed ones.

What happens if I overdose on Fosteum?

There have been no incidences of Fosteum overdose. Fosteum is considered safe, so a one-time overdose should have little to no effect. If you or someone else has taken an excessive amount of Fosteum, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 to ensure safety.

Before taking Fosteum, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You are taking any other supplements or prescription or nonprescription medications, especially vitamins and birth control pills or other medications that contain hormones.

  • You are taking any other medications to treat or prevent osteoporosis.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Fosteum.

  • You have or have had any conditions or illnesses that are affected by estrogen, such as breast cancer or endometriosis.

What are the possible side effects of taking Fosteum?

Because it is a medical food and not a drug, Fosteum is considered safe and has minimal side effects. Some minor adverse effects you may experience include indigestion, constipation, nausea and breast tenderness. If any of these side effects are serious or don’t go away, tell your doctor.

How do I store Fosteum?
