About Femcon Fe

What is Femcon Fe?

Femcon Fe contains two female hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norethindrone (a progestin). This medication helps prevent pregnancy by making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and fertilize an egg. It does not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

How do I take Femcon Fe?

Take one pill at the same time every day, in the order they appear in the packet. The last seven are “reminder” pills that do not contain the estrogen/progestin combination, and your period should start while you are taking these tablets. If you are just beginning to use Femcon Fe, take the first pill on either the first day of your period of the first Sunday after your period starts.

What if I forget to take a dose of Femcon Fe?

It is very important to take Femcon Fe at the same time every day; missing a dose increases your chances of becoming pregnant (unless the dose is a “reminder” pill in the fourth week). If you forget an active pill, take two pills on the day you remember, and then resume your normal dosage schedule. If you miss two pills in a row in week one or two, take two pills two days in a row, and then resume your normal schedule. Use a backup birth control method (such as condoms) for at least a week. If you miss more than two pills from week one or two, or if you miss two pills in week three, throw out the pack and start a new one. Use backup birth control for at least a week. If you have missed several active doses and think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor.

What happens if I overdose on Femcon Fe?

If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on Femcon Fe, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Before taking Femcon Fe, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer or have had an abnormal mammogram

  • You have uncontrolled high blood pressure

  • You have high cholesterol

  • You have heart disease or have risk factors for developing heart disease (e.g. smoking, diabetes, over 35 years old)

  • You have blood clots or circulation-related problems

  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding or a history of irregular menstrual cycles

  • You have any liver problems

  • You have had jaundice brought on by birth control pills or pregnancy

  • You have epilepsy or have ever had a seizure

  • You have tuberculosis

  • You are breastfeeding or have just had a baby

What are the possible side effects of taking Femcon Fe?

Femcon Fe may cause irregular menstrual periods, especially for the first three months. This medication may also cause mild nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, increased hair growth, weight changes, discomfort with contact lenses, or vaginal irritation. These side effects usually subside as your body adjusts to your medication, but tell your doctor if you have any conditions that are particularly bothersome or persistent. Stop taking Femcon Fe and contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of a heart attack, symptoms of depression, signs of liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, clay-colored stools, upper stomach pain), swollen hands or feet, difficulty breathing, coughing with blood, severe migraines, or pain and warmth in one or both legs. If you have any side effects that concern you but aren’t listed here, you should still contact your doctor.

How do I store Femcon Fe?

Store your birth control in a dry space at room temperature. Do not leave it anywhere that children or pets could access it.

Warnings

Do not smoke while using Femcon Fe; this increases your risk for heart disease. If you will need to be on bed rest for an extended period of time, ask your doctor if you should stop taking your birth control in order to reduce your risk of developing blood clots. If you experience severe vomiting or diarrhea while taking Femcon Fe, use a backup method of birth control.
