About Escitalopram

What is escitalopram?

Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for treating depression and generalized anxiety disorder. This class of medication works by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain. This then affects how chemical messages are sent and received by the brain in a specific way which has been shown to improve mood. Escitalopram is distinct from other types of SSRIs because of differences in its chemical makeup. However, escitalopram does have similar side effects to other SSRIs which can include nausea, nervousness, dizziness, reduced sexual desire and other effects. SSRIs like escitalopram are often the first drug therapy option used for treating depression.
