About Efudex

What is Efudex?

Efudex is an anti-metabolite drug. When applied directly to cancerous or pre-cancerous skin growths, it stops the growth of abnormal cells and causes those cells to die. As a chemotherapy agent, it should be handled with care and only applied to the affected skin.

How do I use Efudex?

Before each Efudex application, wash and thoroughly dry the affected areas of skin. To avoid unnecessary skin contact, it is best to use a nonmetallic applicator or wear rubber gloves when applying the Efudex cream to your affected skin. Spread a thin layer of the cream over the affected areas, and do not cover or bandage these areas unless your doctor has instructed you to do so. Wash your hands after the application, even if you did not use your fingertips to apply the medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Efudex?

If you forget to apply Efudex at your normal time, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for another application, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not apply a thicker layer of the Efudex cream than you normally would.

What happens if I overdose on Efudex?

It is unlikely that you will overdose on Efudex when applying it topically (although applying too much may cause greater skin irritation). However, this chemotherapy drug can be very harmful when swallowed. If you or anyone in your household has swallowed some of this medication, call 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.

Before using Efudex, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to this or any other medications • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements • You have an enzyme deficiency known as dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) • You have any infected or open sores • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of using Efudex?

Efudex may cause some skin irritation, including inflammation, redness, discoloration, dryness, soreness, or swelling. This medication may also cause temporary hair loss, an unusual taste in your mouth, eye irritation, irritability, or difficulty sleeping. If you have any of these side effects and they become bothersome, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor right away in the rare case that you experience any serious side effects, such as vomiting, bloody diarrhea, severe stomach pain, mouth sores, or unusual bruising or bleeding.

How do I store Efudex?

Keep the Efudex drug at room temperature (ideally between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Store it away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. If you do not use all of the medication before it expires, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of the remaining topical cream.

Warnings

Do not apply the Efudex drug near your eyes or eyelids, or inside your nose or mouth. If you accidentally get some of the medication in one of these areas, rinse it off with water immediately. Do not use other skin products while using Efudex unless you have gotten permission from your doctor. Wait at least two hours after each application to apply any sunscreen. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when you do need to go outside, as the Efudex drug can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Brand Name

Efudex is a brand name drug. A generic form, fluorouracil, is also available. If your doctor decides you need the brand name form of the drug and you do not have insurance coverage for this medication, remember to use an Efudex coupon or discount card to save up to 64%.

“I have been able to afford and purchase my prescribed medications for prices much better than using my insurance. I am trying to understand how that is possible. Anyway, I highly recommend”
