About Bactrim

What is Bactrim?

Bactrim is a synthetic combination antibiotic containing sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim that is available in tablets intended to be taken orally. Both parts of Bactrim fight different kinds of bacteria, making it more effective against certain kinds of bacteria-based illnesses.

How do I take Bactrim?

Depending on your illness, age, and weight, your doctor may prescribe standard Bactrim medication or Bactrim DS (double strength). You will never take more than 1 pill of the double strength medication, but your doctor may prescribe as much as 2 pills of standard Bactrim. Doses are to be taken every 12 hours, daily. Try to take your medication at the same time every day for it to be the most effective.

Always be sure to drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Bactrim?

Never take an extra dose or additional medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it is almost time for your next dose you must skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you can take your medication as soon as you remember it.

Do your best to take all your doses on time and to not skip doses. Missing doses can lead to becoming more ill or developing antibiotic-resistant illnesses.

What happens if I overdose on Bactrim?

Symptoms of overdose on Bactrim include: confusion, depression, colic, fainting, pyrexia, and hematuria. If you experience these symptoms, call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical attention.

Before taking Bactrim, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially methotrexate or leucovorin.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed, as this medication can be harmful to your baby.

  • You are dehydrated or malnourished.

  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or problems, including kidney stones.

  • You have a folic acid deficiency or anemia caused by a folic acid deficiency.

  • You have reacted poorly to another sulfa drug or trimethoprim, including a lowered blood platelet count.

  • You have HIV/AIDS.

  • You have asthma.

  • You have any severe allergies, or you have medical allergies.

  • You have porphyria.

  • You have a thyroid disorder.

  • You have a G6PD deficiency.

What are the possible side effects of taking Bactrim?

Some Bactrim side effects can be severe. If you experience any of the following, seek medical assistance immediately: difficulty breathing or feeling out of breath, lightheadedness, trouble concentrating, slurred speech, fever, fever with chills or sore throat, worsening cough, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, severe muscle weakness, hives, swollen gums or mouth sores, burning sensation in your eyes, skin pain or sores, jaundice, a red or purple rash that blisters and peels, upper stomach pain and vomiting, dark urine, clay colored stool, watery or bloody diarrhea .

Common side effects include: mild nausea and vomiting, mild rash with itching, diarrhea. These Bactrim side effects do not require medical attention unless they persist or worsen.

How do I store Bactrim?

Store Bactrim medication away from heat, light, and moisture (e.g., a bathroom).

Warnings

Do not stop taking Bactrim medication until you've completed the full run, even if you feel well. Skipping doses can increase your risk of getting ill again or developing antibiotic-resistant illnesses.

If being administered to the elderly, side effects may be more common or worse if they are also taking diuretics, digoxin, or certain other medications while on Bactrim.

Not receiving enough fluids while taking this medication can lead to kidney stones or other problems. Be sure to drink plenty of water.

Avoid tanning beds or excessive exposure to sunlight, as this medication will make you more sensitive to light and you will sunburn much more easily. Always wear covering clothing and sunscreen that is 30SPF or more.
