About Altabax

What is Altabax?

The Altabax drug is a pleuromutilin antibiotic that comes as a topical ointment. It treats impetigo by killing the streptococcus and staphylococcus bacteria causing the infection. Most people who use this medication start seeing signs of improvement in about three to four days.

How do I use Altabax?

Clean and dry the affected skin area, and then carefully apply a thin layer of ointment. Wash your hands when you are done, unless you are using the medication to treat an infection on your hands. Your dosage schedule will depend on your condition, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. If you are using Altabax to treat your child, it is okay to cover the treated area with a bandage in order to keep your child from spreading the ointment around.

What if I forget to take a dose of Altabax?

If you miss an application of Altabax, apply the ointment as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for another application, just skip the missed dose and get back to your regular dosage schedule. Do not apply more of the ointment than you normally would in one dose.

What happens if I overdose on Altabax?

Altabax can be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone in your household has swallowed any of this ointment, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Before using Altabax, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to retapamulin, or you have any other allergies

  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of using Altabax?

Mild side effects of the Altabax drug may include headache, sore throat, stuffy nose, nausea, diarrhea, or skin irritation characterized by stinging, burning, or itching. Contact your doctor if you have any side effects that persist or get worse, you have blistering or swelling skin at the application site, or you notice signs of a new bacterial infection.

How do I store Altabax?

Store the Altabax drug at room temperature, as close to 77 degrees Fahrenheit as possible. Keep the medication out of reach of pets and children, and keep the cap tightly sealed when you’re not using the ointment. Do not store it in the bathroom, as moisture and bright light can negatively impact it.

Warnings

Because impetigo is highly contagious, everyone in your household should be examined by a doctor even if only one person is showing symptoms. Do not share your Altabax ointment even if others have the same condition; everyone in your household will need an individual prescription. Use Altabax on the affected skin only. If you accidentally get any of the ointment in your mouth, nose, eyes, or vagina, rinse with water immediately. Do not use other topical medications on the affected areas unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.

Brand Name

Altabax is a brand name drug, and there is currently no cheaper generic equivalent in US pharmacies. Fortunately, an Altabax drug coupon from FamilyWize can help you save significantly on this brand name medication.
