About Advair Diskus

What is Advair Diskus?

Advair Diskus (not Advair Discus) is a brand-name combination of the drugs fluticasone and salmeterol. This medication is usually prescribed for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) when other medications like albuterol either don’t work, or they have stopped working for a patient over time. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that is used to treat asthma and other breathing conditions by blocking histamines that cause bronchial inflammation while salmeterol is a long-acting, beta blocker medication that relaxes smooth muscle tissue, resulting in the relaxation and dilation of bronchial passages when inhaled.

Advair Diskus is sold in a unique disk-shaped device that is used to inhale this medication. Advair is marketed by the GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company which offers patient assistance to cover high out-of-pocket cost. After reviewing the GlaxoSmithKline website, a variety of programs can be found to reimburse the cost of Advair or give away medication to those who don’t have insurance coverage and/or meet certain income requirements. Other organizations like FamilyWize offer printable coupons for Advair that can be used in your pharmacy without enrolling or applying for patient assistance.

How do I take Advair Diskus?

Advair Diskus comes as a round, flat inhaler that contains measured doses of the medication in the form of a fine white powder. After removing Advair Diskus from its packaging, write the “opened” and “used by” dates in the spaces provided on the inhaler. Use the medicine in the Diskus within a month’s time, or dispose of it. The usual dosage for this medication is one inhalation twice daily at the same times every day. To open the Diskus, hold it level in one hand and put the thumb of your other hand on the thumb grip. Push your thumb into the thumb grip until the mouthpiece appears and clicks into place. Continue to hold the device level or flat and point the mouthpiece towards you. Then push the lever away from you until it clicks. When the lever is pushed back, a dose is ready to be inhaled and the dose indicator on the Diskus goes down. Before inhaling the medication, exhale completely. Never exhale into the mouthpiece. Once all the air has been released from your lungs, put the mouthpiece to your lips and inhale strongly and deeply through your mouth. Remove the Diskus and hold your breath for as long as you comfortably can. Then breathe out slowly. After using the Diskus, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out. Do not swallow the water, as it may contain some of the mediation. Do not try to use a spacer with the Advair Diskus.

What if I forget to take a dose of Advair Diskus?

If you forget to take a dose of Advair, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not consume a double dose of Advair to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Advair Diskus?

No deaths have been reported from the use of Advair Diskus. Excessive dosing may result in irregular or elevated heart rate, chest pain, tremors, dry mouth, headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue or insomnia. If you think you have overdosed on Advair, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

What are the possible side effects of taking Advair Diskus?

Possible side effects from using Advair Diskus include susceptibility to infection, throat irritation, hoarseness, headache, nausea, cough, dizziness, candidiasis, slowed growth in children, muscle pain, slight tremors, stomach problems, and a worsening of symptoms. These are not all the possible side effects from taking Advair. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks.

How do I store Advair Diskus?

Store Advair Diskus at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication away from heat and light. This device is not reusable and should be thrown out within one month after removing it from its packaging.

Warnings

Advair may cause candidiasis (a yeast infection) of the mouth. Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out each time you inhale a dose of Advair to avoid this side effect. This mediation may cause a worsening of conditions in some patients. If you think your medication has stopped working, you are having asthma attacks, or you think you need to use more medication, contact your doctor immediately. Advair should only be used by patients whose conditions aren’t controlled by corticosteroids alone.
