About Zofran Odt

Zofran ODT is a type of drug called a serotonin antagonist. It blocks the action of a certain natural chemical (serotonin) that can trigger nausea and vomiting. This medication may be prescribed to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery.

Don’t remove oral disintegrating tablets from their blister pack until you are ready to take them. Before taking a dose of Zofran ODT, make sure your hands are dry. Place the tablet in your mouth and allow it to dissolve fully; don’t chew it or swallow it whole. You may swallow several times while the tablet dissolves.

It’s important to take each Zofran ODT dose as close to the scheduled time as possible. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for another scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed one and get back to your regular dosing schedule.

Signs of an overdose may include extreme dizziness, severe constipation, loss of vision, or fainting. If you believe that you or someone you know has overdosed on Zofran ODT, get medical attention right away.

Before taking Zofran ODT, tell your doctor if:

· You are allergic to ondansetron or any similar medications (including dolasetron, granisetron, or palonosetron)

· You are taking any other medications, especially diuretics

· You have liver disease

· You have a condition that causes an irregular heart rhythm

· You have a family history of long QT syndrome

· You have any stomach or intestinal problems

· You have low levels of magnesium or potassium in your bloodstream

· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

Zofran ODT may cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, or constipation. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if any of these conditions last a long time or become bothersome. Call your doctor right away if you experience unusual vision changes, stomach pain, or muscle spasms. Get emergency medical help in the unlikely event that you experience chest pain, severe lightheadedness, an irregular heart rate, or fainting. You should also get immediate medical attention if you experience persistent nausea or vomiting, muscle twitching, fever, agitation, hallucinations, or loss of coordination, as these may be signs of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

Store your medication in a refrigerator or at room temperature (36 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). Don’t expose the tablets to moisture, light, or high heat. As with all prescription drugs, keep Zofran ODT away from any children or pets in your home.

Warnings

Because Zofran ODT causes dizziness and drowsiness in some people, you should be careful driving and performing other tasks that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you. Reduce your risk of dizziness by standing up slowly after sitting or lying down.

Brand Names

Zofran ODT is the brand name, orally disintegrating tablet form of ondansetron. Zofran is also available as a regular tablet or an oral solution. The FDA has approved generic ondansetron, which is also available as an orally disintegrating tablet, regular tablet, and oral solution. The generic form is typically much less expensive, so ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch. FamilyWize has coupons for both Zofran ODT and ondansetron, so no matter what form your doctor prescribes, you should be able to save at the pharmacy.
