About Emsam

What is Emsam?

The Emsam patch is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Emsam contains the drug selegiline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). The way Emsam works to treat depression is not fully understood but the inhibition of MAO enzymes, which break down monoamine neurotransmitters, results in the potentiation of these neurotransmitters. These include dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.

How do I take Emsam?

Emsam comes in the form of a patch that is to be applied to clean skin on the upper chest, back (above the waist), upper thigh or upper arm. Do not apply to hairy areas or broken or irritated skin. Shave the area first if necessary. Avoid areas where the patch could be loosened by clothing. The Emsam patch should be removed and a new one should be applied every 24 hours, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Place the patch over a new area of skin each time you apply it. Do not put a new patch in the same area where you applied your previous patch. Fold patches in half after removing them so that the sticky surface is not exposed and throw it in the trash. Wash and dry the area of skin where a patch was applied after removing it. Wash your hands after touching or handling patches.

What if I forget to apply Emsam?

If you forget to apply an Emsam patch, put one on as soon as you remember. Try to change your patch at the same time every day. If you forgot to apply it and it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Never apply more than one patch to try to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Emsam?

There have been no reports of selegiline (Emsam) drug overdose. Signs of overdose on MAOIs include feeling faint, hyperactivity, agitation, severe headache, hallucinations, convulsions, chest pain, stiff jaw, coma and full-body spasm. These symptoms may not be immediate, and they may not all occur. MAOI overdose can be fatal. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed, remove the patch or patches and seek medication attention immediately.
